Day 12

The number of museum and exhibitions in Vienna is overwhelming. And so it the number of tourists. With so little time here, we had to make choices. We decided to go to the Austrian Museum of Applied and Modern Art (MAK) in the morning. It turned out to be a great choice – a fantastic museum with a good mix of exhibits from their permanent collection of 18th-19th century design, arts and crafts, including some great art nouveau items, and several very contemporary exhibitions as part of the 2017 Vienna Biennale. The way the exhibitions/objects were installed was very innovative and most impressive, e.g. the art nouveau chairs were first presented as shadows from behind a screen and a beautiful collection of Persian rugs was suspended on thin wires as a reference to silk threads produced by silk worms. The Biennale exhibitions were also extremely interesting and thought-provoking. One was called “Hello Robot. Design Between Human and Machine”, and included fascinating examples of modern robotics, Another was called “Artificial Tears”, and explore the boundaries between what is human and what is artificial, yet another was about the future of a modern city, and another about designs for future living. Then we went to Sacher cafĂ© for their famous torte. The line was out the door. Their marketing is amazing because every tourist in Vienna has to try this very mediocre cake. We did too, but once is definitely enough. Then we went to St. Peter’s church for an organ concert. On the way back to the hotel we stopped to view the famous Lipizzaner horses. After a short rest at the hotel, we went to Mariahilfer Strasse, the Oxford Street of Vienna to shop. We (Bo) ended up buying one t-shirt. Along the way, we discovered the whole new area of the city, a very cool design district, but had no time to explore it. Then we had dinner in a restaurant recommended by our hotel. It was a nice Viennese traditional non-tourist restaurant and the food was good. We met a Romanian guy who lives in Houston there, and he bought us two glasses of wine after we’d already had a bottle.
